Are Drugs in Islam a taboo?

Drug addiction is an intense and chronic disorder characterized by compulsive drug use that continues despite adverse consequences. Many people mistakenly think that drug addiction only affects people addicted to drugs such as cocaine or heroin. In reality, drug addiction can affect anyone who consumes drugs. Drug addiction is a severe medical condition that can lead to a loss of productivity, financial instability, and even incarceration.

In Islam, drug use is generally considered taboo. Muslims are instructed not to consume any intoxicants, including marijuana and alcohol. Some Islamic scholars believe that marijuana may have some medicinal benefits, but they consider it illicit. Because of this prohibition against using drugs, people addicted to drugs often find it difficult to recover from their addiction.

How are drugs taboo in Islam?

In Islam, drugs are considered taboo. However, there are several references to alcohol in the Quran, and experts say that drugs may also be considered prohibited in Islamic history. Islamic teachings discourage drug use as it is seen as a vice that can lead to moral decay.

The Quran states that "all intoxicants are an abomination" (Al-An'am, 6:148).

Islam forbids the use of all intoxicants, including drugs. Muslims are also urged to avoid drug contact and warn their children against their dangers.

What does Islam tell us about drug addiction? 

One of the basic teachings of Islam is the prohibition of intoxicants, which includes drugs. The Quran states: "Do not consume intoxicants and do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse." (Quran 23:19) 

This prohibition is based on two main reasons: First, drug use can lead to addiction and other negative consequences. Second, it is contrary to the way God designed humans to live. Drugs distort our perception of reality, alter our emotions and tempt us into sinful behaviour.

Islam also teaches that humans are intended to live in harmony with one another and with nature. Drug abuse disrupts these natural balances and can cause serious harm to the individual user and society. For this reason, Islam calls for effective treatment for drug addiction and prevention and rehabilitation.

Why are Drugs in Islam prohibited?

Islam strictly prohibits drugs, as it considers them to be sinful and harmful. The Quran, Islam's holy book, explicitly condemns drug use as an act of disobedience against God:

"And eat not of that which has been slaughtered over ceremonial cleanness (to include alcohol and drugs), except to bring forth fruits thereof. And eat not of that which has been strung together (i.e. a garment or piece of string used for slaughtering). That is fit for the beasts only."

Drug abuse is seen as a severe sin in Islam, and those who engage in it are considered guilty of breaking religious laws.  Drug addiction can lead to psychological problems and even death, which is considered harmful both physically and spiritually. 

Islam discourages the use of drugs, as they are considered a way to disturb one's mind and soul. The Quran explicitly mentions that alcohol and drugs are among the things that will lead people to go astray (Quran 5:90). Both substances can alter one's perception of reality, leading to immoral behaviour.

What happens to the person suffering from an addictive disorder?

One of the central tenets of Islam is that there is only one God and Muhammad is His prophet. Since drugs are considered to be against the will of God, they are generally forbidden in Islam. Even though some Muslims may use drugs, they still have a close relationship with God.

Some believe that addiction–like any other form of behaviour against Islamic values–can lead to a person's soul being condemned by Allah. It could cause them suffering both in this life and the next, depending on the severity of their addiction. Others argue Islam does not condone drugs or alcohol but sees them as preventing harm and allowing people to enjoy life responsibly. 

Ultimately, it is up to each Muslim to decide whether they believe drugs are sinful.

What is the impact of drugs on individuals, families, friends, and society? 

According to Islamic beliefs, drugs are considered taboo and are not allowed in Islam. It means that Muslims may not use or even possess drugs. Islam believes that using drugs can lead to addiction and other harmful effects on one's health. Sometimes, drug use can also lead to criminal behaviour, such as robbery or assault. Therefore, Muslims need to avoid drug use for their safety and others around them.

Conclusion: 

The taboo of drugs in Islam is based on the belief that using drugs leads to immoral and illegal behaviour. The Islamic faith forbids anything that leads to sin, including drug use. Some Muslim scholars believe that certain drugs can lead to severe spiritual consequences. Others maintain that using drugs is not a responsible way to spend time or energy.
